I Gave My Life For Thee

The hymns in our hymnbooks, and the songs that we sing are intended to inform, uplift, and teach (Eph. 5:19; Col. 3:16). Certain songs teach an overall grand truth, like “Amazing Grace.” Other songs teach an overall grand example, such as “I Gave My Life For Thee.” I would like to take a quick glimpse at the hymn “I Gave My Life For Thee.” I feel it is important because it asks some very vital, important questions for the faithful follower of Jesus. Let us notice this verse by verse. I will start with verse two, and end with verse one. Notice first: HE LEFT (v2). He left the glory circled throne (Isa. 6:1-3). We are given a glimpse of this in Isaiah’s vision when he says that he saw the Lord, high and lifted up. It was guarded by two seraphim, each having 6 wings. They cried the song “Holy, Holy, Holy”, and His glory filled the earth. It is a beautiful scene. When you look to His earthly life in the gospels, He didn’t even have a place to lay his head (Matt. 8:20). Our Savior left a throne in glory for nothing on earth, willingly. He did it to save mankind, that means you and I. Notice second: HE SUFFERED (v3). When you have some time, flip through the gospel accounts and read of the gruesome pain and agony our precious Savior suffered on the cruel old cross of Calvary (Matt. 26; Mark 14; Luke 22; John 18). All of that was done to keep you and I from eternity in hell. He suffered, willingly, all that torture for mankind, that means you and I. Notice third: HE BROUGHT (v4). Notice the gifts that came on the day of Pentecost, in Acts 2. They weren’t physical things, but spiritual blessings. The gifts were salvation, pardon, and love. Those blessings are continual for those in the body of Christ. He, willingly, brought these gifts for all of mankind, that means you and I. Notice last: HE HAS GIVEN (v1). He gave himself as a ransom, which is something with which to loosen, or a redemption price. He was known as the atonement. I was guilty, He took my place. He is the giver of all life. He gave His life (Matt. 20:28), to give us life anew (John 6:51). He, willingly, paid a debt mankind could never pay, that means you and I. What have you left, suffered, brought, or given for the cause of Christ? Jesus paid it all, all to Him I owe.
